Summer’s ultimate “band camp,” The Vans Warped Tour, kicked off its 16th year at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California last Friday, June 25.  The popular annual touring music festivals has a proven track record for both showcasing punk vets and launching up-and-coming bands into the mainstream. Everyday Noise dropped by the first stop out of 43 dates to support Orange County band Fast Forward Romance. Having entered the Ernie Ball Battle of the Bands contest, Fast Forward Romance won the honor of playing the Ernie Ball stage and taking their blend of pop-rock to the crowd of kids looking for their new favorite band.

Formerly Kyle & Natalie (guitarist & vocalist Kyle Archer and vocalist/actress Natalie Distler—she plays Denis Leary’s daughter on FX’s hit dramedy Rescue Me, which has its sixth season premiere on Tuesday), the duo opted for a name change and enlisted the fresh sounds of Ryan Williams (bass), Fredrik Eriksson (lead guitar), Bertel Osterberg (keys) and Jonathan Logan (drums). According to their MySpace they have aspirations of a US tour, recording a full-length album, and establishing themselves as artists with a unique identity and sound.

For now the band calls Orange, California home but has no problem referencing Long Beach, New York, even Egypt in their songs. With fun tracks like “Dirty Laundry” (apparently about bad roommates and “skanky girls”) you can’t help but sing along by the time the last chorus hits. Expect big things from Fast Forward Romance, who just finished putting the final brushstrokes on an EP with veteran producer Ron Aniello (Lifehouse, Barenaked Ladies).

Key tracks: “Dirty Laundry,” “Clever Love Song,” “Turn It Up”
