MP3: Canvas, ‘The Habit’

25 May

Our pals in Santa Ana crew Canvas—playing the House of Blues in Anaheim this Friday, May 28, with, believe it or not, ’80s faves Berlin—have gifted us with the worldwide exclusive (!) of a new tune, tentatively titled “The Habit.”

Why just “tentatively”? Well, according to keyboard player/guitarist/effervescent band representative Piper Michelle, “I think we just gave it the temp name ‘The Habit’ cause we were eating at The Habit burger,” referring to the Habit location in the same shopping center as the loft space the band’s always hanging out/rehearsing/putting on shows at. So it could have just as easily been “Geisha House,” but thankfully appetites didn’t shake out that way.

The song is more of the lovely, harmonious fun we’ve come to expect from Canvas, with singers Keila Morris and Doll Knight lulling the listener into a peaceful, reflective sensibility, with a staccato-marked tempo change coming two-thirds of the way in. Not exactly the kind of song that makes you think about hamburgers, but who are we to question the artistic process?

Click on the big forward arrow to play (you probably figured that out), click on the down arrow to download an mp3 of the song for your very own. The band’s recently added bassist Justin Deckert, known well to discriminating Southern California music fans equally for his work with the inimitable Billy Kernkamp and the quality of his hugs, and drummer Gustavo Peraza, likely a hugger in his own right, to their permanent lineup. They’ll be talking lunch spots and riding on the metro with Berlin on Friday, May 28, at the House of Blues in Anaheim—Canvas are direct support, which is rather nifty. Tickets are $22.50 in advance and $25 at the door. Now feels like the time to make some sort of comment about the bands taking breaths away, but let’s skip that and just enjoy the song, k?

(Full disclosure: Canvas guitarist George Bernal designed our stylish and fab Everyday Noise logo.)

Great article! I can’t wait to hear them in person.

Big hugs for you Albert. For the record, I have no hand in choosing the song titles. If I were to pick a temporary title, however, it would be Ching Me to Sleep, My Country Albert.
